Reach Your Dreams presentations

What: The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award – Bronze and Silver Presentation for will be held on Wednesday 6 August at the Education Development Centre. Participants who have recently completed their Bronze or Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award will be presented with their certificates in front of teachers and family by Office for Youth (the State Award Office) and guest speaker Rebecca Marshallsay.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is an international, flexible program for all young people, whatever their background or ability. Its benefits range from developing self-confidence and self-reliance; gaining sense of achievement and responsibility; discovering new skills, interests and talents and developing leadership skills. The Award provides young people with amazing opportunities, perfectly summarised by Kurt Hahn. Co-founder of the Award,

“We are all better than we know. If only we can be brought to realise this, we may never be prepared to settle for anything less.”

 Fresh Forums for Youth

Are you passionate about making a change for our environment? Are you ready to be heard? Then come to the Youth Environment Council’s FRESH Forums for Youth! Each forum brings young people aged 12 -25 together to discuss environmental issues with local experts.

What’s stressing you out? What’s making you laugh? What are your hopes?

What:The Postcards Project invites you to use a postcard as your canvas to express ‘What’s on your mind?’ through words, drawings, images or photos. Your postcards will be included in an exhibition during Mental Health Week.

Why: The City of Charles Sturt is coordinating this project to promote wellbeing in their community, to increase awareness of mental health and to support Mental Health Week 2008, celebrating the fact that we are all living through our own experiences everyday.

When: Launch of exhibition 9 October 2008, Civic Library, Woodville. Mental Health Week 5-11 October 2008

How: Send your postcard art to Postcards Project, PO Box 1 Woodville SA 5011 Make your own postcard, or pick up a blank one from locations around the City.

National Healthy Bones Week

What:National Healthy Bones Week has been a national joint initiative between Dairy Australia and Osteoporosis Australia for the past 14 years, highlighting the important role of calcium-rich foods, such as dairy, in the development and maintenance of healthy bones and prevention of osteoporosis.

This year the campaign is ‘Lifting the Lid on Lunch’ and focusing on the benefits of consuming a calcium rich lunch at primary school to maximise peak bone mass

SALA Festival 2008

What: A two week festival showcasing South Australia’s visual artists; their talent, diversity and creativity. It is also an opportunity for you as audience to become involved.

The SALA Festival celebrates the unique contribution artists bring to the community. It is an occasion to venture out and discover just who the local artists are, view works that are beautiful, thought provoking and inspiring.

When: Friday 1 August 2008 to Sunday 17 August 2008

There are over 400 exhibitions, open studios, workshops, artist talks and screenings that you can choose from. Venture into the world of Moving Image at the Queens Theatre, or do something totally different by joining a night tour of projection art by cycle. You will find art on the street, encounter art that moves –whether on a screen, a building or simply you.

National Missing Persons Week


35 000 people reported missing in Australia each year. Approximately 20 000 are under the age of 18.

What: National Missing Persons Week aims to raise awareness of the issues associated with missing persons. This year's program includes promotional events and activities initiated by State and Commonwealth police jurisdictions and other stakeholder agencies. The theme for the week is:

`When communication goes missing, so do our youth.

Don't close the door to communication'.

Urban Art Pod

Carclew is launching the Urban Art Pod - a public art training and employment project.

The Urban Art Pod is looking for… passionate, enthusiastic, creative, innovative and flexible visual artists, designers (landscape, urban, graphic) digital media artists, graffiti and aerosol artists.

As part of the Urban Art Pod you will experience….

• How you can influence and alter the urban landscape
• Grow your ideas into public art & design projects
• Tackling the corporate maze - grants and funding for public art projects
• How to pitch your concepts and designs
• Technical know-how - skills and resources in public art production
• Design and create public artworks and get paid for it
• Collaborations, mentorships, partnerships

The General Sir John Monash Foundation Awards - Leaders making a difference to Australia’s Future

What: The State Government is a proud supporter of The General Sir John Monash Foundation Awards, one of Australia’s prestigious scholarship awards programs.

Up to eight awards are presented annually to outstanding Australians graduating from Australian Universities and enable the recipients to study abroad at the world’s best universities, appropriate to their field of study.

Eligible Australians are encouraged to nominate for the awards, which are presented by the Governor-General in November.

Closing date: Nominations for the 2009 awards close on 31 August 2008.

SAYAB Scholarship applications now open

What: Applications are now open for the South Australian Youth Arts Board annual scholarships. Four scholarships are available totalling over $38,000 in the following art forms:
• Dame Ruby Litchfield Scholarship (performing arts) - $12,500
• Ruth Tuck Scholarship (visual arts) - $12,500
• The Independent Arts Foundation New Writing Scholarship - $6,500
• Colin Thiele New Writing Scholarship - $6,500.

Who can apply? Artists aged 26 and under.

SAYAB Scholarships can be used for any means that furthers a young artist’s creative or professional development. This may include going overseas, studying, taking a break from work to focus on their chosen art field or even hiring studio space.

Theme: The theme for this year’s SAYAB’s Scholarships is Live your Passion.

Foundation for Young Australians Youth Change Makers Grant

What: Youth Change Makers is a grant round supporting young people who are advocates for change in their community, with assistance of up to $10,000 per applicant group.

Who can apply? Individuals or small groups of young people aged 12-25

This can be done with the support of an organisation, for example, a community organisation or school, enterprise, youth group, or local government.

Closing date: Monday 6 October 2008

ZBOOM Multifaith Multicultural Youth Forum


What: 2 day event designed to be a fun filled weekend offering lots of activities to learn, share and enjoy the company of other young people with similar interests. There will be music, food, workshops, demonstrations and lots of action throughout the weekend. The weekend culminates with a drumming demonstration David Jones – a BK with amazing skills and expertise.

Who: young people between the ages of 16 – 28

Where: Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre, City West Campus, UniSA

When: Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 October 2008

Cost: $25 for two days or $20 for one day

Places are limited to 150 so young people who wish to attend are encouraged to phone to register.

ZBOOM Funding Opportunity for Young People aged 12 – 15

The Foundation for Young Australians is now accepting entries for Your Eyes Only!

What: Your Eyes Only is a creative funding opportunity for young people 12 to 15 years to submit a creative entry that celebrates the strengths of their community through their eyes.

Successful applicants will nominate a community group working with young people in their community (for example a school, youth group or sporting group) to receive a donation. This donation would then be used by the community group to further its work by either purchasing much needed equipment or adding funds to an existing program
