What is National Youth Week?

Held in April each year, National Youth Week (NYW) is the single largest youth event in Australia. NYW celebrates and recognises the contributions, achievements and views of young Australians, engaging more than 250,000 young people in 2006.

National Youth Week is a celebration of youth that encourages all young people aged 12 -25 years to take part in activities and enjoy special events that celebrate their individuality and diversity. It is an opportunity for young people to take centre stage, express their ideas and views, raise issues of concern to them and showcase the positive contribution that young people make to society.

National Youth Week encourages young people to take part in activities and enjoy special events that celebrate their individuality and diversity.  National Youth Week aims to highlight the positive contribution that young people make to society. The objectives of National Youth Week are to:

  • provide opportunities for young people aged 12-25 to express their ideas and views, raise issues of concern to them, and act on issues that affect their lives;
  • provide opportunities for the wider community to listen to young people and acknowledge and celebrate the positive contribution that young people make to their local communities; and
  • promote a community focus on issues of concern to young people.

In South Australia NYW funding is administered through local Councils participating in the Youth Advisory Committee program. Community organisations wishing to participate in NYW should contact thier local Council to disuss opportunities.
